How website pricing works in South Africa
South African website pricing varies by an order of magnitude between agencies — from under R5,000 for template-based builds up to R200,000+ for premium agency work. The variation is driven by three factors: cost structure (CBD offices vs lean remote teams), technical and design output, and brand premium.
Cost structure is usually the biggest driver. Sandton CBD agencies pay top-tier rent and run layered staffing models with senior account management — most of their R50,000+ pricing is overhead, not better output. Lean remote teams (like ours) deliver the same Lighthouse scores, Core Web Vitals and design polish at a fraction of the price because the cost base is substantially lower.
Technical and design output does vary, but not always in line with price. We've taken on rebuilds for clients who paid R80,000+ for sites scoring 35 on Lighthouse. We've also seen R3,500 builds that genuinely meet modern technical standards. Compare on Lighthouse score, Core Web Vitals, schema validity, accessibility and design polish — not on price tag.
Brand premium is the third factor. Some agencies charge for the brand alone — that's a legitimate business choice but it doesn't automatically translate to better technical outcomes for your website.
