Choosing an online store platform.
There are three broad options: a hosted platform, an open-source store, or a custom build. The right call comes down to payments, shipping, how much you want to own, and where you are headed.
A hosted platform runs the store for you on a monthly plan. An open-source store is software you run on hosting you control. A custom build is engineered around your exact business. None is universally better, they suit different operators. Here is how they compare for the South African context.
Go hosted if…
- You want the platform to handle hosting, security and updates
- You value speed to launch and a polished admin over deep customisation
- Your catalogue and flows fit what the platform does out of the box
Go open-source if…
- You want to own the store outright, with no platform lock-in
- You need custom flows, custom fields, or tight content and commerce
- You are comfortable with, or hiring for, managed hosting and maintenance
Payments
Both integrate the local payment providers South African shoppers expect, for card and instant EFT. Open-source setups tend to offer more flexibility in how checkout and payment logic behave; hosted platforms keep it simpler and more locked down. For most stores, both get shoppers to a working local checkout.
Shipping
Local courier and delivery aggregation is well supported on both, via add-ons. If your fulfilment is unusual, an open-source or custom build makes bespoke rules easier.
Hosting and performance
A hosted platform handles performance for you. An open-source store is only as fast as it is built and hosted, done carelessly it is slow, done properly it is quick. Either way, speed still decides how you rank and convert, so it has to be engineered, not assumed.
SEO and scale
Open-source and custom builds give you full control of how the store appears in search, which helps content-led SEO. Hosted platforms are capable but more constrained. At scale, the ceiling is usually your hosting and engineering, not the platform badge.
The bottom line
If you want a store you fully own and can shape without limits, we lean toward an open-source or custom build. If you would rather rent the platform and move fast, a hosted one is a sound choice. Either way, we build it to be fast, owned and handed over.
